This is another odd recording from the past.
David Stackenäs, Johan Berthling and Raymond Strid met in 1997 and formed the band Animes,
dedicated to playing European Free Improvised Music. Animes are represented on the CD
”Sounds 1999” (Blue Tower Records BTCD 09/10/11)
In 2003 we wanted to try to improvise more in a direction of melodies, harmonies and rock beats.
Using the language of Pop and Rock music, but still using elements from free improvisation. We
got some inspiration from groups and people like Captain Beefheart, US Maple and David Sylvian.
I had also played with the group Maxcolic in the early 90s (Mats Gustafsson, Anders Lindsjö,
Christian Munthe, Raymond Strid).We played a mix of deconstructed Free Jazz and Rock -there is
one track from the album "Sounds - Contemporary Swedish Improvised Music" (BTLP 01/02
recorded 1989).
David Stackenäs came with ”NOT ME”, a book of poems by Eilen Myles and then he started to
sing and play the electric guitar. He improvised the lines and harmonies. Johan Berthling hooked
up with his bass guitar and improvised in the idiom of what was happening. I tried to play in a very
odd way in terms of the beat and the time. In one way the result became unpredictable and
charming. In another way it became a bit annoying, "can the drummer play or not?"
We also got the permission from Eilen Myles to use her poems from "Not Me” (1991).
I decided to put all 17 tracks on the album, far too long for a physical album. In this case I didn't
want to kill my Darlings.
